About Peter Fischer-Appelt

Peter Fischer-Appelt, President Emeritus of the University of Hamburg, is a giant of German higher education and a leader in international education. As president of the University of Hamburg for two decades, he steered the institution through difficult years of student unrest, launching a period of unprecedented growth, development and internationalization for the University.

With unceasing efforts Dr. Fischer-Appelt established productive research and exchange relationships with universities in Europe and the United States during an era when economic and political constraints made the task particularly difficult. As a long-time colleague and friend of Indiana University, he has promoted strong and mutually beneficial student/faculty exchange programs between IU and Hamburg.

Dr. Fischer-Appelt was born in the Republic of Germany and received the doctorate of theology from the University of Bonn in 1964. He was a member of the theology faculty of the University of Bonn from 1961 until his selection as president of the University of Hamburg in 1970. Dr. Fischer-Appelt has served as a trustee or officer of numerous educational institutions and organizations in Europe, and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Foundation for the Exchange of Scientific and Cultural Information be Telecommunication, of Zurich and New York. His international distinction has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including the Gold Medal of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the Medal Pro Cultura Hungarica, and the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Temple University in Philadelphia.
