About Charlene Brown

Charlene Brown was the director of Hutton Honors College extracurricular programs and activities and advisor to several student organizations. She did her undergraduate studies in political science and her graduate studies in public communication at Stanford University and has taught news writing, reporting, and communications law for the IU School of Journalism. She is a co-author of The Media and the People and a co-editor of The First Amendment Reconsidered. She has been a Poynter Faculty Fellow and serves on the Advisory Committee of IU's Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions.

She is a member of the IU Truman Scholarship Nomination Committee, the Academic Advisory Committee for Mellon Programs at the IU Art Museum, and EnGAGE, a group associated with the IU Center for the Study of Global Change that is working to increase the use of interactive technologies to internationalize undergraduate education. She has served on the advisory committee for LESA (Leadership, Ethics, and Social Action), the LeaderShape at IU Committee, the Foster International Living-Learning Center Committee, and the strategic planning committee of the Office of Academic Support and Diversity. She was also the associate director of the Wells Scholars Program, and her honors include the IU Foundation's Jerry Tardy Pride of Indiana Award and Indiana University's E. Ross Bartley Award.
