Craig Stewart received a B.A. in Mathematics and Biology from Wittenberg University and his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Indiana University Bloomington. For decades, he has been a leading innovator and strategist in advanced computing and cyberinfrastructure for research and development. From 2005 to 2020, he led the Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute, IU’s flagship organization for research in cyberinfrastructure, informatics, and computer science in support of engineering research, artistic creativity, and cybersecurity. Research in life sciences and medicine have been Stewart’s focus throughout his career. Starting in 2007, Stewart set a goal of having all of IU’s central research IT systems aligned with HIPAA, a goal accomplished in 2009, making IU the first US supercomputer center to do this.
Stewart has been on several committees for the National Science Foundation, as well as on advisory committees and in leadership of numerous organizations related to advanced computing. He is a past chair of the Coalition for Advanced Scientific Computation and in this role testified before the House Science and Technology Committee. He was a visiting faculty member in Computer Science at the Universität Stuttgart and a Fulbright Senior Scholar at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany. Stewart retired from full time work at IU in October of 2020. He served as the founding treasurer of the Funeral Consumer's Alliance (FCA) chapter of Bloomington, Indiana. FCA provides public education and referral to resources regarding end-of-life and after-death care.
In 2020, Indiana University recognized Stewart’s significant contributions to the university and science by awarding him a Distinguished Service Medal.
