Weinberger graduated IU with a B.A. in 1959 and M.D. in 1963. After completing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at IU, he began his research career at Stanford University in the area of hypertension. He was the first researcher to establish the connection between a high dose of estrogen in birth control pills and hypertension in women. He also developed one of the first radio immunoassays to measure renin and aldosterone in blood which enhanced research in the field of sodium metabolism. His research was the first of many new developments in the causes and treatments of hypertension. Weinberger served on the IU School of Medicine faculty for over five decades.
