- School of Optometry Foley House Basement Key Award - 1985
Dr. Bennett was Dean Emeritus of the School of Optometry and Professor of Optometry at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He held a B.S. degree and Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University. Dr. Bennett was in private practice in Bloomington from 1959-70. From 1970-1975, he was Director of Patient Care for the IU optometry clinics and Associate Professor of Optometry. He went to Ferris State University in Michigan in 1975 as the founding dean of optometry. He returned to Indiana University in 1988 as Dean of the School of Optometry. Bennett was named Indiana Optometrist of the Year in 1975, Professional Man of the Year by the Michigan Association of the Professions in 1983, and winner of the Keyman Service Award presented in 1984 by the Michigan Optometric Association. In 1985, Dr. Haine was presented with the Indiana University School of Optometry Foley House Basement Key Award which recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and/or service to the IU School of Optometry. He was honored by the Indiana Optometric Association with its Distinguished Service to Optometry, Meritorious Service, and Lifetime Achievement Awards. He was elected as a Fellow in both the American Academy of Optometry and the National Academies of Practice and has been designated as a Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. He served as president of the Indiana Optometric Association, the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, and served for five years on the Board of Trustees of the American Optometric Association. He held appointment to the Clinical Affairs Education committee of the MOA.
The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry's (ASCO) Dr. Jack Bennett Innovation in Optometric Education Award was established in March 2000 to recognize an ASCO volunteer for an outstanding innovation to optometric education.
