- School of Optometry Foley House Basement Key Award - 1984
In 1977, Dennis Yamamoto and Irvin Borish were walking back from lunch when they witnessed the demolition of the Foley House in progress. The Foley House basement was the primitive facilities at 744 East Third Street in Bloomington, Indiana that served as the IU Optometry clinic for ten years before the present Optometry building was completed. Hoping to salvage a suitable souvenir from the Foley House, they convinced one of the demolition workers to sell them the basement door for a mere $2. And, so, the Foley House Basement Door Key Award, which recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and/or service to the IU School of Optometry, was born.
In 1979, Dr. Dennis Yamamoto received the Meritorious Service Award from Indiana Optometry, given to a member in recognition for service to the profession of optometry in a specific category or categories.
In 1984, Yamamoto was presented with the Indiana University School of Optometry Foley House Basement Key Award.
