- Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Senior Award - 2019
Sophia Muston, an IU Wells Scholar from Indianapolis, is on track to graduate with a degree in journalism in 2019. She was one of 21 seniors to receive the Kate Hevner Mueller Award in 2019. Muston was a visiting student at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in 2017, and served as copy editor of the Indiana Daily Student during the spring of that same year. During the summer of 2017, she traveled to London, England, to assist with pre-production, production, and post-production phases of Catsnake's videos, including its first-ever television advertisement. In early fall of 2017, Muston completed an independent study project through IU's The Media School, during which she produced a 4-minute video used to promote the school's summer program in London.
Professionally, she has served as a web intern for Guarango Cine y Video, Lima, Peru, during which time she worked part-time updating the company's website's English text, assisting with translations, and crafting original content for their streaming service web page. Muston was as a junior fellow at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., where she conducted legal research using Spanish language materials to curate a collection of open-access web resources about indigenous people's self-government in Peru. Her research has reached over 70,000 unique visitors across thirty countries. And, from January 2018 to present, she has been working in IU's Office of the Provost as a Multimedia & Special Projects Intern, producing the IU 2020 Series, a documentary series following 12 Bicentennial Class students through their four years at IU.
