Eldred F. Hardtke, clinical psychiatrist and professor of psychology, died on July 29, 1971 while attending the meetings of International Congress of Applied Psychology at Liege, Belgium. He had been a member of the faculty of Indiana University for 21 years, a period during which he contributed substantially to the eminence attained by its graduate program in clinical psychology, combining training in both psychology and psychiatry. A native of Wisconsin, Hardtke was born January 29, 1914 and received all of his higher education at the University of Wisconsin, earning his B.A. in 1937, his M.S. in 1938, and his Ph.D. in 1944, all in psychology, and his M.D. in 1946.
He took his medical internship and psychiatric residency at the John Sealy Hospital, University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and then served from 1948 to 1950 as neuropsychiatrist and instructor in psychiatry in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, following which he joined the IU faculty. He was a Diplomate in psychiatry and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as president of the Indiana Neuropsychiatric Association, the Indiana District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association, and the Owen-Monroe County Medical Society. He served on the Board of Directors of both the Monroe County Mental Health Association and the State Mental Health Association, and was a member of the Regional Mental Health Planning Committee for Central Indiana.
