Roger Philip Maickel was born in Floral Park, New York on September 8, 1933. He earned his B.S. from Manhattan College in 1954, M.S in 1957 and Ph.D. in 1960 both from Georgetown University, and completed postgraduate studies at Brooklyn Poly in 1955. He was a biochemist at the National Heart Institute before serving for twelve years as professor of pharmacology at Indiana University from 1965 to 1977. He later joined the pharmacy and laboratory animal program faculty at Purdue University from 1977 until retirement in 1999.
He was an active editor with Pergamon Press from 1970-1988 and on the editorial board of Neuropharmacology from 1974-1988. Recipient of the Alumni Award in Medicine from Manhattan College in 1972, he was also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, the American Institute of Chemists, and the Collegium International de Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum. He was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, American Society for Testing and Materials, the Society of Toxicology, Society of Neurosciences, International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology, Society of Forensic Toxicologists, Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the American Chemical Society. He served on the board of directors for TEAMS, Inc. from 1981-1987 and the American Council on Science and Health from 1993-2000. He was also a trustee of AAALAC.
