Rollin Charles Richmond was born May 31, 1944. He earned his B.A. in zoology from San Diego State University in 1966 and his Ph.D. in genetics from Rockefeller University in 1971. He spent 17 years on the faculty of the Department of Biology at IU Bloomington, from 1970-1989, before serving as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida and provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at SUNY Stony Brook. From 2002 to 2014, he served as president of Humboldt State University in Arcata, California.
His research focused on the genetic mechanisms of fruit fly evolution and the effects of cocaine on Drosophila. He was a member of the population biology panel of the NSF in 1988, served on the editorial boards of Evolution, Journal Heredity, and Genetica. He was a fellow of the NIH and Rockefeller University, and a McMaster Fellow. The HHMI, NIH, and NSF funded his research. Richmond was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is a member of the Genetics Society of America, Society for the Study of Evolution, Behavior Genetics Association, Society of Neuroscience, Council of Colleges Arts and Sciences, Cosmos Club, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi.
