Mary Selecky received a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Her connection with Indiana University involves collaboration with an expert panel of advisors on the dean’s council for the university’s Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health.
Selecky is a clinical professor in the School of Public Health at University of Washington. Previously, Selecky served as Washington State Secretary of Health from 1998 until April, 2013. During her time as secretary, she served three Governors; Governor Locke, Gregoire and Inslee. Prior experience includes leadership roles in local government in some of Washington’s most rural areas; Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens counties. Selecky also worked as a local public health administrator for two decades and as an assistant dean of students at Sarah Lawrence College and the University of Pennsylvania.
Selecky is a past president of the Washington State Association of Local Public Health Officials. Selecky has served on the boards of Providence Health Care Spokane and Stevens Counties, NEW Hunger Coalition, and the Empire Health Foundation the National Association of City and County Health Officials. She serves on the accreditation committee of PHAB, the dean’s council for the Fairbanks School of Public Health, and the Scientific Committee for United Health Foundation State Health Rankings. Selecky is also a member of the ASTHO Alumni Society. In 2010, she received the American Medical Association’s Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. In 2019, Selecky was awarded Indiana University’s Bicentennial Medal, in recognition of her distinguished service and contributions to public health.
