Sean Nicholson-Crotty earned his B.A. in European history from Western State College in 1993, his M.A. in American history from Colorado State University in 1999, and his Ph.D. in political science from Texas A&M University in 2003. He began teaching as an associate professor at Indiana University (IU) in 2013 and was promoted to full professor in 2016. In 2021, he earned the additional honorary title of O’Neill Professor.
At IU’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Nicholson-Crotty specializes in public management and federalism. More specifically, his research interests include intergovernmental relations and public policies within subnational governments. He has authored and published over 50 articles related to these topics in renowned political science and public affairs journals.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Nicholson-Crotty worked for nine years at the University of Missouri where he taught in the political science department and the Truman School of Public Affairs. Throughout his time at the University of Missouri, he earned the Provost’s Outstanding Junior Faculty Research and Creative Activity Award, an annual award given to the most productive and prominent assistant professor at the university.
Throughout his professional academic career, Nicholson-Crotty has been presented with numerous awards and honors. In 2017, he was selected as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. While in graduate school, he earned the Brian Jones Award, given to the best graduate student research paper. He is also a member of several professional associations, including the American Political Science Association, the Midwest Political Science Association, the Public Management Research Association, and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.
