Steven A. Miller is an IU alumnus and former treasurer of Indiana University. Miller earned a B.S. in business (1970) and M.B.A. (1974) from Indiana University Bloomington. He served as the university treasurer from 1991 to 2004.
During his undergraduate career he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and the Army ROTC. Upon graduation, he served as a United States Army artillery officer, and after completion of his service he entered the private sector. Miller was an assistant vice president at Aetna Capital Management, Inc., and has held various treasury management and investment positions at The Upjohn Company and the National Bank of Detroit. Miller also served on the City of Kalamazoo Pension Committee from 1981 to 1983.
In 1991, Miller was elected treasurer of Indiana University, a position he held until 2004. As treasurer, Miller is credited with forging strong relations with the trustees, providing crucial advice and counsel on key investments and important bond issues, and enhancing the university's investment management and debt financing strategies. Miller also served on the Investment Committee for the Indiana University Foundation and on the Committee for Investments for Clarion Health Partners, Inc. (now IU Health), and was chairman of the investment committee for the board of trustees of the Indiana Public Employees Retirement Fund, a position he was appointed to by the governor. He was also an original member of the advisory board of the Indiana Future Fund I, a venture capital fund focused on developing the life sciences industry in Indiana.
After leaving Indiana University, Miller worked as senior vice president and practice leader of Northern Trust Asset Management in Chicago (2005-2015). Miller was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Joseph E. Kernan in 2004. He has done volunteer work for the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN., as well as the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross.
Miller received the IU Bicentennial Medal in September 2019 in recognition of his distinguished service as treasurer of Indiana University.
