Alfonso Pedraza Martinez earned his B.S. in industrial engineering from the Universidad de Los Andes in Colombia and his M.S. in economics from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 1998 and 2004, respectively. Upon graduation, he continued his education at INSEAD where he earned his M.S. and Ph.D., both in management, in 2009 and 2001, respectively. He began his teaching career at Indiana University (IU) Kelley School of Business in 2011 as an assistant professor of operations and decision technologies. He was promoted to associate professor in 2017 and earned the additional honorary title of John and Esther Reese Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies in 2021.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Martinez worked as a humanitarian logistician at the Office of the Mayor in Bogota Colombia from 1999 to 2003. He later served as an instructor at the Uniandes School of Management in Colombia from 2003 to 2006. Martinez’s area of expertise includes humanitarian operations and crisis management, sustainability, operations management in emerging markets, and global supply chains.
Throughout his robust professional career, Martinez’s teaching and research have been recognized with an array of awards and honors. His publications have won POMS’s Best Paper Award in 2014, 2012, and 2009. He earned the Sauvain Teaching Award from the Kelley School of Business at IU in 2016. He was also recognized with an IU Trustee Teaching Award in 2015.
