About Brian Matthew D'Onofrio
Brian D’Onofrio is currently the Sharon Stephens Brehm Endowed Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology from the University of Virginia, and he completed his internship at Children’s Hospital Boston/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. D’Onofrio’s research seeks to understand the etiology, assessment, and treatment of child and adolescent mental health and substance use problems using multiple approaches, including quasi-experimental designs, longitudinal research, and intervention studies. His recent research has focused on using and combining several advanced epidemiologic approaches to better understand the consequences of perinatal risk factors, particularly maternal medication use during pregnancy. He also is exploring the risks and benefits of psychiatric and pain medication for the individuals themselves, particularly related to rare-but-serious outcomes such as suicidal behavior, drug overdose, and traumatic brain injury. Furthermore, his research is focused on better understanding health disparities, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized groups of individuals. Most of his research consists of secondary data analysis of large datasets (e.g., national Swedish datasets, datasets of 30,000 twin pairs in Sweden, and health insurance claims datasets of tens of million of people in the United States). Finally, he also conducts intervention and health services research, focused on how to best assess behavioral health problems in community settings, including primary care clinics, behavioral health clinics, and emergency departments.
Dr. D’Onofrio’s research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, European Union, Swedish Research Council, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and other foundations. His research, teaching, and service have also been acknowledged by major awards from numerous organizations, including the Association for Psychological Science, Behavior Genetics Association, Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Indiana University, and the Society for Research in Child Development.
