- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2021
Sherry Benner graduated from the occupational therapy (OT) program in 1974 and enjoyed a rewarding and fulfilling career as an occupational therapist working with children in school settings, outpatient rehabilitation centers, and at Humana. She received the distinct honor of being appointed head of the Indiana Occupational Therapy License Committee by three governors. She continues working in retirement as a substitute teacher for special education in the Hamilton Southeastern school district. Sherry and her husband, Bill, have named the IU Department of Occupational Therapy in their estate plan to support students. Sherry hopes that their gift will bring a sense of comfort to students and the knowledge that someone supports them in pursuit of their dreams. She shares her experience with other OT alumni, encouraging them to reflect on their excellent IU education and consider helping students to see the value and importance of the profession of occupational therapy. We are pleased to honor Sherry with a Spirit of Philanthropy Award.
