Dr. Hannah Maxey earned her A.S. in dental hygiene from Indiana University (IU) in 2000. Upon graduating, she continued her education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) where she earned her B.G.S. in biology and chemistry in 2007. She earned her M.P.A. in health policy and management from the IU School of Medicine (IUSM) in 2011 and her Ph.D. in health policy and management from IU in 2014. She is an assistant professor and director of the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research & Policy at IUSM. She earned the additional, honorary title of Otis R. Bowen in 2021.
Beyond IU, Maxey is involved in health workforce policy and research at the state and national levels. In addition to leading numerous initiatives within the State of Indiana, Dr. Maxey currently serves as an expert consultant to the National Governor’s Association and National Association of Community Health Centers on health workforce policy and related issues. Broadly interested in studying the impact of health workforce policy on access to care and health outcomes, her recent work examines the effect of state regulation of the dental hygiene workforce in underserved communities. Currently, she focuses on assessing workforce models supporting the integration of oral health with primary care.
Throughout her robust teaching and practicing career, Maxey has earned several accolades, including the Oral Health Champion Award from the National Network for Oral Health in 2015 and the Graduate/Resident Poster Presentation 1st Place Award from the Indiana Rural Health Association Conference in both 2010 and 2011. She was inducted into Delta Omega’s National Honor Society in Public Health in 2012.
