John Salzer received an M.S. in physics from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. Salzer joined the Indiana University (IU) Astronomy faculty in 2009 as a professor of astronomy and chairperson of the Department of Astronomy.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, Salzer was a professor and department chair at Wesleyan University. Salzer’s research interests span a broad spectrum of topics related to extragalactic astronomy, including the construction of galaxies and star formation.
In 2017, Salzer was awarded a Trustees’ Teaching Award, an award that recognizes the top 6% of tenured and tenure-eligible faculty to highlight the importance of outstanding teaching at IU. He has served on numerous committees and panels and was bestowed with a Presidential Faculty Fellow Award by President Clinton in 1995.
