Marguerite K. Shepard Scholar in Obstetrics & Gynecology

About Caitlin Bernard

Dr. Caitlin Bernard earned her B.S. and M.D. from the State University of New York in 2006 and 2010, respectively. Upon graduation, she completed an obstetrics and gynecology residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2014. She later continued her education at Washington University where she earned her M.S. and completed a family planning fellowship in 2017. Bernard joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2017 as an assistant professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology. In 2019, she was awarded the additional title of Marquerite K. Shepard Scholar in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Bernard’s clinical interests are in contraception, abortion, and miscarriage care, in addition to general obstetrics and gynecology. Her research interests include improving access to contraception and understanding how to decrease unintended pregnancy and improve pregnancy outcomes. She has worked in Kenya for the past four years through the AMPATH/IUSM-Kenya partnership. There she is engaged in care, teaching, and research programs, including improving access to contraception, early pregnancy care, and improving maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Bernard is a member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the American College of OB/GYNs, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, and the Society of Family Planning.
