Weiming Mao earned his M.B. and M.S. degrees from Fudan University in 2001. Upon graduation, he continued his education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he earned his Ph.D. in 2008. After receiving his Ph.D., he completed postdoctoral training in glaucoma research at University of Noth Texas Science Center (UNTHSC). He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) faculty in 2018 as an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. In 2020, he earned the additional, honorary title of Jay C. and Lucile L. Khan Scholar in Glaucoma Research and Education.
Prior to joining the IU faculty, he served on the faculty at UNTHSC as an assistant professor, the graduate advisor of the Visual Science Graduate Program, and the Associate Director of Research. His research primarily focuses on glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications related to this subject.
