- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2022
Upon retiring in 2020 after 34 years of service at IUPUI University Library, James Kendrick established The George Webster and Odesta Kendrick Scholarship. James created this scholarship to help students continue their education in honor of his parents because, growing up in the Jim Crow South, his parents were not able to finish elementary school. James wanted to ensure that finances did not stand as a roadblock for IUPUI students trying to earn their degree and that is when he got the idea of creating a scholarship. As a lifelong student himself, James has received two degrees from IUPUI (a bachelor’s degree from the School of Science and a certificate from O’Neill School of Public & Environmental Affairs) and will now spend part of his retirement time helping others reach their educational goals.
