About Marion E. Broome

Dean Marion Broome received a B.S.N. from Medical College in 1973, a Master's in Nursing from University of South Carolina in 1977 and a Ph.D. in child and family development 1984 from the University of Georgia. She completed post-doctoral studies in 1988 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Broome began her career as an instructor in 1978 at the Medical College of Georgia and achieved associate professor by the time she located to Rush University in Chicago in 1988. In 1994, she left to assume the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Research Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in 1999 she was recruited to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to serve as associate dean for research. During her five year tenure at UAB the School of nursing rose from 51st in the ranks of NIH funded schools to 16th. She joined Indiana University in 2004 as the University Dean of Indiana University School of Nursing. She was awarded Distinguished Professor in 2006. Dr. Broome is an expert in the field of pediatric pain. Over the past two decades she has been externally funded (American Cancer Society, National Institutes of Health) to conduct research in which she developed and tested interventions designed to assist children to cope with acute and chronic pain. Her recent research has extended into research ethics related to informed consent and assent for children in research, and research misconduct in clinical trials. Dr. Broome has published over 74 articles, 14 chapters and 5 books, primarily in the area of pediatric pain and research ethics for children. Dr. Broome has received numerous awards including the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, Medical College of Georgia, (1988) and the Distinguished Alumnus, University of South Carolina (2006). She was inducted as a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Nursing in 1994 and in 2003 was selected as editor-in-chief of Nursing Outlook, the official journal of the American Academy of Nursing.

In 2020, Broome was presented the Bicentennial Medal for her distinguished contributions to Indiana University.
