Jim Faris graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1968, followed by residency (1971) and fellowship (1975) training. Between his residency and fellowship, he completed a tour of duty with the United States Army. He is a well-respected cardiologist and retired faculty member. Giving back is synonymous with Jim Faris. Not only is he a member of the School's Alumni Association Board and J.O. Ritchey Society, Faris has been on the School of Medicine Leadership Annual Giving Dean's Council Board of Directors since 1999, serving as President from 2009-2011. In this role he encouraged others to support medical education and research annually.
Faris is a tireless advocate and supporter of medical education. He was instrumental in the establishment of the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship, created the Faris Family Scholarship through his estate, and led the scholarship fundraising committee for his medical class reunion which resulted in over $420,000 contributed. Since then, the Marvin A. Evens & Larry G. Hitchcock Class of 1968 Scholarship Fund has benefited 26 students with almost $360,000 in scholarship dollars. The School of Medicine is grateful for Jim's unwavering dedication over the years.
