- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2024
Since 1983, The Scottish Society of Indianapolis has been a place for people to celebrate Scottish heritage, history, and culture. The Society has exemplified a deep and abiding dedication to the cultural enrichment and educational advancement of our community. Through their unwavering support of the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University, they have played a pivotal role in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Scottish heritage, arts, and culture.
The Scottish Society of Indianapolis’ philanthropic contributions have funded the Scottish Foundation of Indianapolis McMath Scholarship. This scholarship supports students in the IU School of Liberal Arts who are interested in studying subjects related to Scottish art, archaeology, dance, music, history, language, literature, and poetry.
By exploring this heritage, students gain insight into the resilience of these communities, their connection to the land, and their unique contributions to literature, art, and music. Additionally, Gaelic heritage serves as a vital reminder of the importance of preserving linguistic diversity and cultural identity in an increasingly globalized world. It fosters a sense of belonging and pride among Gaelic communities while promoting cultural exchange and appreciation among people of all backgrounds. In essence, the study of Gaelic heritage helps us celebrate the diversity of human culture, fostering a deeper understanding of our shared past and a more inclusive future.
The Scottish Society's commitment to philanthropy aligns perfectly with the IU Spirit of Philanthropy Award's core values, making them an ideal recipient for this honor. Their benevolence has left an indelible mark on our institution and has furthered the mission of the School of Liberal Arts.
