'Lotte' Auerbach, founder of the science of mutagenesis, discovered that gene mutations could be induced by mustard gas. Her work earned the Darwin Medal from the Royal Society of London and the Keith Prize from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. A visiting professor at IU in 1970, Dr. Auerbach was a fellow of the Royal Societies of London and Edinburgh, the Danish Academy of Science, and the National Academy of Sciences (USA). She received honorary degrees from Trinity College, Cambridge University, and Leiden University.
