- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2025
To say Joyce Sommers is passionate about the arts doesn’t begin to describe her dedication and commitment to that which she holds near and dear to her heart. Joyce worked tirelessly for 33 years as Executive Director of the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple, retiring in 2009. In 2011, the Indiana Historical Society recognized her as a Living Legend. Today, her interest and enthusiasm for the arts continues to make a difference at Herron School of Art and Design.
At Herron, she served as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board from 2010 to 2019, and today she stays connected through her role as an honorary board member. Joyce made her first gift to Herron in 1997 to the Friends of Herron and has since supported the school’s study abroad program and its general fund. Since 2011, she has been a member of the John Herron Society, the school’s leadership giving society.
Most recently, Joyce was welcomed into the Herron Legacy Society which recognizes individuals who name Herron in their estate plans. Joyce directed her gift to the Valerie Eickmeier Professional Development Fund for Students. This is but one example of how she leads by example.
Dean Greg Hull shares, “The dedication of Joyce Sommers continues to make a difference at Herron. She cares deeply about those we serve, and she understands the impact that philanthropy has within an organization. She has been a mentor to me, and I feel fortunate to have her as part of the Herron family.”
Herron School of Art and Design proudly recognizes Joyce A. Sommers as a 2025 Spirit of Philanthropy honoree!
