Lucretia’s journey with IU began with her BSN in 1972 and MSN in 1977, launching her into 10 years of service with Riley Hospital for Children and then 25 years of compassionate service with the Marion County Health Department. From caring for teenage mothers to supporting children with cancer and disabilities, Lucretia’s career was defined by empathy and commitment. Even in retirement, Lucretia’s passion for nursing continues to shape lives. She established two scholarships, both a testament to her lifelong commitment to others. The Howard & Lucille Scammahorn Nursing Scholarship, named after her parents, supports students in the Accelerated Bachelor of Nursing program with financial need has awarded close to $1000,000 to more than 20 students. Additionally, the Lucretia Scammahorn Nursing Scholarship, named in her estate, will begin to support undergraduate nursing students facing financial challenges.
Lucretia’s legacy inspires and empowers the next generation of nurses, leaving a lasting impact on IU and the entire nursing community. We are deeply grateful for her unwavering support and dedication.
