Ain Haas is a professor emeritus of sociology in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI and an affiliated faculty member in the Institute for European Studies in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at IU. He joined IUPUI's faculty in 1978 as an assistant professor of sociology and retired as professor emeritus in 2014. Haas also served as a visiting professor twice at Tartu University in Estonia. He received his B.A. in Sociology from Indiana University Bloomington in 1972 and his M.S. in 1973 and Ph.D. in 1977 both from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
In 2005, Haas received a Fulbright Scholar Award to teach about the different aspects of American society at the Baltic Center of North American Studies at the University of Tartu in Estonia, and also conducted research on the issue of return migration to Estonia. He is a recipient of the Vilis Vitols prize from the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies and served as president of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies.
