About Bryan McCormick

Bryan McCormick served on faculty in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies in the School of Public Health at IU Bloomington from 1995 to 2017. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Recreation and Parks from Pennsylvania State University in 1986 and 1990 and his Ph.D. in Parks Recreation and Tourism Management from Clemson University in 1993. Following his doctorate, McCormick began his academic career as an assistant professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at East Carolina University in 1993. In 1995, he left East Carolina University to join IU’s faculty in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies. During his tenure at IU, McCormick served the department as assistant professor from 1995 to 2001, associate professor from 2001 to 2011, associate chair for research and graduate education from 2009 to 2011, chair from 2011 to 2015, and professor from 2011 to 2017. In 2017, McCormick left IU for an appointment as professor of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Temple University, a title which he still currently holds. His research focuses on the social functioning and community participation of adults with severe mental illness.

McCormick is a two-time recipient of Fulbright scholarships. In 2010, he conducted research and lectures in psychiatric services at the University of Kragujevac in Serbia and in 2017, at the University of Tuzla in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was elected as a Fellow into the Academy of Leisure Sciences in 2011 and the National Academy of Recreation Therapy in 2013 and is the past president of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. In 2014, he received the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and has also received the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Teaching Excellence Recognition Award, the David R. Austin Member of the Year Award from Recreation Therapists of Indiana, and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association Presidential Award.
