Joseph Clancy Clements is a professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese and professor emeritus of linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU. As a researcher in contact linguistics, he joined IU’s faculty in 1985 where he also served as director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Linguistics from 2007 to 2016 and remained on faculty until his retirement in 2017. Aside from IU, Clancy served a year as professor and chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico from 2006 to 2007. He received his M.A. in Romance Linguistics and Indo-European Linguistics from the Universität Tübingen, Germany in 1979 and his Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics from University of Washington in 1985. Clements received a Fulbright award in 1987 to research in India and the Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) award from IU in 2004.
