Foster W. Blaisdell Jr. first accepted a position at IU in the Department of Germanic Studies in 1956 and for nearly thirty years as a professor there, he helped see it through growth and eminence. He served eight years as associate dean of the Graduate School but his real interest was in research and teaching particularly in Old Icelandic language and literature with later interest in the field of Arthurian literature. Blaisdell completed his undergraduate work at the University of California in Berkeley and earned his Ph.D. there in 1956. Blaisdell passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 1985 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
