John E. Wilz was a professor emeritus of history at IU Bloomington. He served in the army in Korea from 1951 to 1953 and received his bachelor’s degree in 1954, his master’s degree in 1955, and doctoral degree in 1959 all from the University of Kentucky. He started at IU as a lecturer in history in 1958 and was promoted to the rank of full professor in 1975. Wilz taught as a visiting lecturer or professor at the University of West Indies in Jamaica from 1965-1966, Hamburg University from 1970-1971, the University of Graz in Austria from 1979-1980, and the Indiana University campus in Saudi Arabia in 1983. In 1986, he served as a Fulbright scholar lecturing and conducting research in American history at Busan National University in Busan, Korea.
Wilz was a dedicated teacher and scholar, authoring seven books, and also served as a mentor for many young historians. He retired from IU in 1990 due to illness and passed away in 1994.
