Norman Overly is a professor emeritus of education in the School of Education at IU Bloomington. He received a B.S. from Kent State University in 1953, a M.A. from Kent State University in 1957, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1966. Overly joined IU’s faculty in 1970 as an associate professor of education in the School of Education and earned the rank of full professor in 1979, also serving as director of curriculum and instruction. During the 1985-1986 academic year, Overly served as a Fulbright scholar at multiple affiliations in Japan conducting research in education communities and curriculum decision making. From 1993 to 1995, he served as provost of the Malaysia Cooperative Program in the Office of International Programs at IU. He also served as co-chair of the Bloomington Faculty Council and as a co-secretary of the University Faculty Council. Overly retired from IU in May of 1996 with the title of professor emeritus of education.
In 2020, Overly was presented the Bicentennial Medal for his distinguished service to Indiana University.
