Owen V. Johnson is an associate professor emeritus of journalism in The Media School at IU Bloomington. He earned a B.A. in History from Washington State University (Pullman) in 1968 and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History (East European) from the University of Michigan in 1970 and 1978. Prior to joining IU, he worked as a reporter, editor, and producer at WUOM/WVGR in Ann Arbor-Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1969 to 1977 and as a professor at Southern Illinois University from 1979 to 1980.
Johnson joined IU’s faculty in 1980 as an assistant professor of journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington and was appointed as associate professor in 1987. While at IU, he also served as director of graduate studies in the School of Journalism from 1990-1991, director of the Russian and East European Institute from 1991-1995, twice as acting director of the Polish Studies Center, and as adjunct associate professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences. During the 2009-2010 academic year, he served as Fulbright Chair in East European Studies at Warsaw University in Poland. Johnson is considered a specialist on World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle, as well as Russian and East European area mass media and Czech and Slovak history. He retired from IU in May of 2014 with the title of associate professor emeritus.
