Sherry Ricchiardi-Folwell has been a member of the faculty at the IU School of Journalism at IUPUI since 1989. Since 2000, she has served as the director of IU School of Journalism DART Center for Journalism and Trauma Affiliate Program.
A former war correspondent and avid researcher in the fields of international journalism and conflict journalism, Ricchiardi-Folwell studies how the media covers violence. She is the author of numerous books and articles on this topic. At IUPUI, Ricchiardi-Folwell developed a highly acclaimed course titled "Foreign Studies in Journalism: Following the Path of the Pulitzer," which covers media coverage in former war zones. The course includes a 2 week trip to former war zones Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Ricchiardi-Folwell commutes to IUPUI from her home in Washington, D.C.
Ricchiardi-Folwell is a senior writer for the American Journalism Review, covering international issues. She is also a consultant with the Crimes War Project. As a consultant, Ricchiardi-Folwell helps journalists understand how international humanitarian law relates to the media. She is a two-time winner of the prestigious National Press Club Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism.
