W. Edson Richmond was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1916. He earned degrees from Miami University of Ohio and Ohio State University. He accepted a position at Indiana University as an instructor in 1945 and remained at IU until his retirement in 1986. He traveled extensively to Norway, once as a Fulbright Scholar in 1959. He was a Fulbright professor at the universities of Helsinki and Abo, A Ford Foundation grantee for research in Scandinavia (1963), and a Visiting Research Professor in Oslo in 1976. In 1977, Richmond was elected to the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters. He served a President of the Society of Fellows of the American Folklore Society.
