Walter E. Bron earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1959. He was drafted into military service as his thesis studies were underway, and served the U.S. Army as a research assistant from 1954-55. Bron served on staff at the I.B.M. Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY from 1957 to 1965, followed by nearly twenty years on the faculty of Indiana University at Bloomington. He joined the University of California, Irvine faculty in 1986. He was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society, and he received a Guggenheim Fellowship (1966) and the Senior Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.
