Leonard Haseman was born in Linton, Indiana, and was one of nine children. He earned A.B. and M.A. degrees from Indiana University in 1905 and 1907 respectively. He spent 1905-06 as an Assistant in Entomology and Zoology at the University of Florida. This experience helped solidify his thesis research for the M.A. degree.
From 1906-08 he was Station Entomologist under J.M. Stedman at the University of Missouri. He studied at Cornell from 1980-10 as an instructor in insect morphology. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell in 1910 and returned to the University of Missouri as Assistant Professor and Chairman of the Department. He gained full professorship in 1918, and continued as Chairman of the department until his retirement in 1954 at age 70.
