About George E. Edwards

Before joining the law school faculty, George E. Edwards lived for six years in Hong Kong, where he was associate director of the Centre for Comparative and Public Law at the University of Hong Kong Law Faculty. He also lectured in law (adjunct) at the City University of Hong Kong Law Faculty and for the Law Society of Hong Kong. He is coeditor of Volumes 15 of the Hong Kong Public Law Reports. From 1987 to 1991, Professor Edwards practiced law with the Wall Street firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore. Following law school, he served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

At Harvard Law School, he served as editor of the Harvard Law Review and associate editor of the Harvard International Law Journal.

During the 1999 fall semester, Professor Edwards served as a visiting associate professor of law at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago. During the 2001 fall semester, he was a visiting fellow in the United Kingdom at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law, at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge. He is a senior member of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge.

In the fall of 2001, Professor Edwards traveled to South America on a Fulbright grant to teach an International Legal Transactions graduate course at the Universidad de San Pedro, in Chimbote, Peru.

Professor Edwards is accredited to the United Nations to represent the National Bar Association and has served as a delegate to various United Nations conferences such as the Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Establishment of the International Criminal Court, in Rome in 1998. He also has represented the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor.

As founding director of the law school's Program in International Human Rights Law, Professor Edwards has, since 1997, facilitated more than 109 Indiana University law student summer internship placements at the United Nations and other human rights organizations in more than 52 countries around the world. He also serves as faculty advisor to the LL.M. track in International Human Rights Law.

Professor Edwards was the first regularly elected chair of the American Association of Law Schools International Human Rights Law Section. He is former chair and current co-chair of the International Organizations Interest Group of the American Society of International Law, and vice chair of the International Law Section of the National Bar Association.

Countries where Professor Edwards has lectured, spoken at conferences, delivered papers, represented or advised human rights groups, or participated in seminars include: China, South Africa, Kuwait, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Chile, Australia, Italy, Thailand, Malaysia, Lithuania, Peru, Costa Rica, the Republic of Korea, and Switzerland.

Since arriving at Indiana University, Professor Edwards has been honored with several law school and university-wide awards, including: the Grimes Fellowship (2007); the IUPUI Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement (2007); the George W. Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service (Spring 2004); the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award (Spring 2002); the John Morton-Finney and Brenda Elise Bowles BLSA Award (Spring 2001; Spring 2003); and the Glenn W. Irwin Experience Excellence Award (Spring 1999).
