About Lee A. Learman

Dr. Learman received a B.S. from UCLA in 1982 (psychobiology), a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1988 (social psychology) and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1990. He was one of the first 3 Harvard medical students to complete an MD/PhD program funded by the MacArthur Foundation to promote the development of academic social scientist â€" physicians. He joined the IU School of Medicine in 2008 as Clarence E. Ehrlich Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the National Center of Excellence in Women's Health. Dr. Learman came to IU after a distinguished career at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he was Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Director of Curricular Affairs in the Dean's Office of Graduate Medical Education. He was inducted into the Academy of Medical Educators at UCSF and served as chair of its Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Learman is an expert in the use of hysterectomy and alternative treatments for noncancerous uterine conditions, the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of chronic pelvic pain, and the assessment of clinical competencies in graduate medical education. In 2004 Dr. Learman received a Roy M. Pitkin award from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) for most outstanding original research publication -- a report of a multi-center randomized trial comparing total and supracervical hysterectomy. In 2005 he was the keynote speaker at the 2nd International Congress on Advances in Uterine Leiomyoma Research at the National Institutes of Health. In 2008 Dr. Learman received the Established Investigator Award from the American Educational Research Association for his work exploring methods for assessing reflective practice in OB/GYN residents.

Dr. Learman has served on multiple committees of the National Board of Medical Examiners, including 3 years as chair of the Step 2 Test Material Development Committee for Ob/Gyn. He served for 6 years as an elected representative to the ACOG Council for Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) before becoming CREOG Program Chair from 2008-2011.

Dr. Learman is an oral examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was elected to membership in the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society in 2008. He also serves on the Editorial Board of Web M&M, an on-line journal and forum devoted to quality improvement in medicine and sponsored by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
