About Flora Hammond

Dr. Hammond came to Indiana University after working at Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, North Carolina from 1995- 2009 where she served as the Research Director, Brain Injury Program Director, and Brain Injury Fellowship Director.

Dr Hammond graduated from medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine and completed her residency at the Baylor College of Medicine. She completed a brain injury fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.

Dr. Hammond has served as an invited participant to both the Aspen Conference and Galveston Brain Injury Conference. She has served on the board of the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina and the Governor-appointed NC Traumatic Brain Injury Council. She is on the editorial boards of Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation and Development Neurorehabilitation.

Dr. Hammond's passion is with research, specifically in the field of brain injury. Her research has focused on outcome prediction and measurement, relationships, mood and behavior, and treatments to improve outcomes. Since 1998 she has served as the Principal Investigator and Director of the Carolinas Traumatic Brain Injury Model System grant funded by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research. She also serves as principal investigator of several other Federally funded research grants including a multicenter study from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to study the use of Amantadine to treat irritability and aggression in individuals with chronic brain injury. Dr. Hammond has also directed her research efforts towards learning about improving outcomes following spinal cord injury.
