About Janet P. Near

Janet P. Near is the Dale M. Coleman Chair of Management and Chairperson, Doctoral Programs, Kelley School of Business, and Adjunct Professor, Sociology Department and Philanthropic Studies Department, Indiana University. Her research interests focus on: whistle-blowing in organizations, including predictors of whistle-blowing behavior by organization members and results of their activities, in terms of both the organization and the member; and the relationship between job and life satisfaction including predictors and outcomes of both. She has published several articles on these and, with Marcia P. Miceli, a book entitled Blowing the Whistle: The Organizational and Legal Implications for Companies and Employees.

Dr. Near received the B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1972 (independent major entitled the Psychology of Power), the M.A. in 1975 and the Ph.D. in 1977, both in Sociology, from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She joined IU in 1978 and became the Coleman Professor of Management in 1996.

Professor Near has served on several editorial boards and was Consulting Editor for the Journal of Management from 1996-98. She served a term as the elected representative-at-large to the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and an earlier term as representative-at-large for the Organization Behavior Division Board of the Academy of Management. She served as the chairperson of the Management Department from 1990-1996 and chairperson of Doctoral Programs in Business from 1996-1999. She teaches courses in organization theory and design for undergraduates, MBA students and Ph.D. students. She received the MBA Association Teaching Excellence Award in 1982 and 1988, and the Doctoral Students Association Award for Exceptional Inspiration and Guidance in 1998, and the Doctoral Students Association Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2001.
