About Stephen B. Leapman

Stephen B. Leapman, M.D. received a B.S. from Albright College in Reading, Pa. and his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. After serving as a surgical Research Fellow at the Boston Children's Hospital defining tumor angiogenesis mechanisms under the tutelage of Dr. Judah Folkman, he completed a surgical residency program at the Boston University Medical Center. While in the Navy he became a member of the Division of Transplantation & Immunobiology at the Naval Medical Research Center, Bethesda, Maryland. It was during this period that he did additional training in clinical transplantation and directed the clinical renal transplantation program at the National Naval Medical Center.

Dr. Leapman joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1977. His interests in clinical transplantation and immunobiology led to his appointment as associate director of transplantation, director of the transplant immunobiology laboratory, and Professor of Surgery. He was considered an authority in renal and pancreas transplantation with research interests in mechanisms of pharmacologic immunosuppression.

Dr. Leapman had a long time interest in medical education. In 1997 he received both the Medical School's Faculty Teaching Award as well as the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award from the I.U. Board of Trustees. He was the Clerkship Director in the Department of Surgery and a member of the Board of Trustees in the Association of Surgical Education. In 2001, Dr. Leapman became the first Executive Associate Dean for Educational Affairs in the I.U. School of Medicine. He was a principal designer of the Competency-based Curriculum, the cutting edge curricular movement in the School of Medicine that defined a complete physician. Upon being named Chairman of the Admissions Committee in the School of Medicine, he was honored with a named Professorship, the Frank C. and Ruby L. Moore and George T. Lukemeyer Professor. In 2005, he became the first Dolores and John Read Professor of Medical Education.
