About Thomas A. Broadie

Thomas Broadie, M.D., Ph.D., was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He pursued his undergraduate education at Princeton University (A.B., 1963), and his medical education at the University of South Dakota (BScM., 1965) and Northwestern University (M.D., 1967). He served his surgical internship and first year of residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received the remainder of his surgical training at the University of Minnesota Hospitals finishing as chief resident in 1975. During the course of his surgical training he served a fellowship in surgical research under the direction of John P. Delaney, M.D., Ph.D., and in 1976 was granted a Ph.D. in Surgery. The topic of this thesis was "Pyloric Reflux Gastritis." He served two and one half years in the United States Navy as Research Medical Officer at the Naval Medical Research Unit at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland achieving the rank of Commander in the Medical Corps, United States Naval Reserve.

He joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery of the Indiana University School of Medicine in July, 1978, as Assistant Professor of Surgery, and was granted the rank of Professor in 1990. In 1998 he was appointed the Frederick W. Taylor Professor of Surgery. He holds the administrative position of Chief of Surgery at the Wishard Memorial Hospital. He has served as Secretary and President of the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has also served as Secretary and President of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Midwestern Surgical Association. His principle clinical and investigative interests are in the areas of endocrine, and trauma surgery.
