Dean Roberts is the Gerald L. Bepko Professor of Law at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law - Indianapolis since July 2007. Prior to that, he was Deputy Dean, Sumter Davis Marks Professor of Law & Sports Law Program Director at Tulane Law School in New Orleans, where he was on the faculty for 24 years. A 1975 Stanford Law School graduate, Dean Roberts clerked for a one year with a judge on the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco and then was an attorney with Covington & Burling, the then largest law firm in Washington, DC, from 1976-83 where his primary client was the National Football League. He joined the faculty at Tulane Law School in 1983 and developed a substantial reputation in sports law. He founded and directed the first U.S. sports law certification program. He has co-authored the leading sports law textbook in the U.S. and has written several articles in prominent law reviews, many on antitrust, labor law, and intellectual property issues as they apply to sports. He is a frequent speaker at sports law conferences throughout the world and has testified nine times before Congressional committees. Dean Roberts has been an officer and board member of the Sports Lawyers Association for 23 years, serving as president from 1995-97. He has since 1987 edited a monthly sports law newsletter and oversees publication of the SLA's scholarly journal, The Sports Lawyers Journal. He has done extensive consulting work for over 30 sports clients including Minor League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, UEFA, FIBA, the English Premier Football League, the English Football League, several teams and current and former NFL and NBA players and coaches.
