About Patrick J. Loehrer

Dr. Loehrer received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1975 and subsequently his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1978. He completed his internship and residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center and a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Indiana University. In 1983, he joined the faculty of the IU School of Medicine where he rose to the rank of Professor. In 2002, he was appointed Director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and held the title Bruce Kenneth Wiseman Professor of Medicine from 2002-2010. He is presently Director, Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and holds the title H. H. Gregg Professor of Oncology.

In 1984 he co-founded the Hoosier Oncology Group and has served as chairman since its inception. Dr. Loehrer is recognized as a prolific clinical researcher in a variety of malignancies, including genitourinary, gastrointestinal, thymic tumors and seminal work with the anti-neoplastic agent ifosfamide. He has served as Chairman of the Genitourinary Committee for the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), and is the Director of the Gastrointestinal Research Program at the IU Cancer Center. He serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Research at the IU Cancer Center. He received the W. George Pinnell Award in 2003.

Dr. Loehrer has received numerous awards including the Flick Family Fund Award, American Cancer Society Fellowship and the American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Award, the Glenn Irwin Experience Excellence Award, the ECOG Young Investigator Award, the Danielson Award, the Collaborator of the Year Award from the Walther Cancer Institute and the Exceptional Service Award of the Foundation for Thymic Research.

Dr. Loehrer has served on the boards of the ECOG Foundation and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He currently serves on the parent board and Chair of the Medical Oncology Subcommittee of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of Oncology and co-Editor of the Yearbook of Medicine and has served on the Editorial Board of numerous journals.

Dr. Loehrer and his wife, Deborah, reside in Indianapolis. They have three children, Patrick, Andrew, and Elizabeth.
