About James A. Madura

Dr. James Madura received a B.A. degree from Colgate University in 1959, with honors in mathematics. He received his M.D. degree from Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1963. His surgical internship and residency was completed at the Ohio State University Hospital Department of Surgery in Columbus, Ohio. He became an NIH Surgical Trainee and did a year's research in the Department of Immunology at Duke University in 1968. He joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 1971 as an Assistant Professor and has moved up the ranks to his current position as Professor of Surgery in 1981. He was named the J. Stanley Battersby Professor of Surgery in March, 2001.

Dr. Madura has been a director of both student and resident education since he came to Indiana University and has been named Clinical Professor of the Year by numerous graduating senior classes. He has developed strong clinical interests in pancreatic, hepatic, biliary and gastrointestinal diseases and their management. His insight into congenital duodenal anomalies in the adult, and bile reflux gastritis have been presented at regional and national meetings.

Dr. Madura is an active member of the Central Surgical Association, the Western Surgical Association, the Midwest Surgical Society and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is a Governor of the American College of Surgeons, and has been active in education and technical committees of that organization.
