About John J. Coleman III

John Joseph Coleman, III, M.D. was born November 15, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts and was educated at Thayer Academy (1965), Harvard College (1969), and Harvard Medical School (1973).

After completing General Surgery and Plastic Surgery residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals and a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at University of Maryland Hospitals, in 1980 he joined the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine with appointments in Surgical Oncology and Plastic Surgery and was awarded in 1986 the Wadley R. Glenn Chair in Surgery. In 1991, Dr. Coleman became Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Indiana University Medical Center where he continues to pursue problems in reconstruction after oncologic treatment and facial deformity. He occupies the James E. Bennett Chair in Plastic Surgery.

Throughout his career, Dr. Coleman has focused on the treatment of cancer and of difficult deformities and aesthetic problems of the head, neck and trunk. A long-time leader in microsurgical reconstruction, his research and publications have demonstrated the improved function and decreased morbidity that results from single stage reconstruction with microsurgical techniques. As Program Director of the Residency Program in Plastic Surgery at Indiana University Medical Center, he has maintained a teaching program that transports these principles and practices to patients through the activities of the residents and fellows.

A member of numerous national and international professional organizations devoted to Oncology and Plastic Surgery, Dr. Coleman has been particularly active in the American Head and Neck Society as a current member of he Executive Committee and the American Board of Plastic Surgery of which he is now the chairman.
