About David P. Fidler

David P. Fidler earned his B.A. in political science and government from the University of Kansas in 1986. Upon graduation, he continued his education at the University of Oxford where he earned his M.A. in international relations and affairs and his B.C.L in law in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He later earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1991. Since joining the Indiana University (IU) School of Law faculty in 1995 to teach public international law, Fidler has held an array of appointments and titles at the university. In 2007, he was named the James Louis Calamaras Professor of Law, and, in 2019, his title changed to James Louis Calamaras Emeritus Professor of Law.

Fidler is one of the world's leading experts on international law and public health, especially regarding infectious diseases. He is also an internationally recognized expert on the regulation of foreign investment, biological weapons and bioterrorism, the international legal implications of "non-lethal" weapons, and the globalization of baseball.

In addition to his teaching and scholarly activities, Professor Fidler has served as an international legal consultant to the World Bank Group (on foreign investment in Palestine), the World Health Organization, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (on global public health issues), U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Science Board (on bioterrorism), the Federation of American Scientists Working Group on Biological Weapons, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Working Group, the Public Health Law Programme at the University of Durban-Westville, South Africa, and HIV/AIDS support groups in Japan.
