Professor Crabb received a B.S. from Purdue University in 1974 and an M.D. from Indiana University in 1978. He completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the IU School of Medicine with a fellowship in Gastroenterology. He joined IU in 1983 as an assistant professor of medicine and biochemistry and attained full professorship in 1990. He was appointed Vice Chairman for Research for the department in 1993 and Assistant Dean for Research for the school in 1999. Dr. Crabb was appointed chairman of the Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2001. The department is comprised of approximately 350 faculty, 150 residents, and 100 subspecialty trainees. The department receives about $70 million per year in research support and has broad and deep clinical and educational programs.
Professor Crabb's clinical interests are in liver diseases, particularly alcoholic liver disease. His research interests are in the control of alcohol metabolism, genetics of alcoholism, and the mechanism for alcoholic liver injury.
Professor Crabb's honors and awards include: membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Society for Clinical Investigation; the Association of American Physicians; and the American Clinical and Climatological Association; receipt of the Marcus Ravdin Medal; the Bowman Prize for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; the Outstanding Professor in Clinical Sciences and Golden Apple teaching awards; the Central Society for Clinical Research Young Investigator Award; the Research Society on Alcoholism Young Investigator Award; and an NIH Merit Award.
He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Health and Hospital Corporation (which oversees the public health activities of Marion County), and is a member of the Boards of Directors of Bioanalytical Systems, Inc., Polymer Technology Systems, Inc., and the Association of Professors of Medicine. He is vice-president of the Central Society for Clinical Research and serves on the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
Professor Crabb has published over 100 research articles and 30 books and book chapters.
